This page outlines your money eco-journey and is here to help you stay determined and on track! It contains detailed actions that you and your nursery setting can take at every step of your journey towards sustainability (including ways to share the message).

Below is a description of a setting at the beginning of its eco-journey which currently has No Priority for the Environment in terms of selecting banks, suppliers and investments.

  • No consideration has been given to choosing: suppliers, banks or investments based on their environmental and ethical standards.

Below is a description of a setting which qualifies for the stage: Some Consideration for the Environment, in terms of selecting banks, suppliers and investments.

Money

  • The environment and ethics are taken into consideration for some purchases within the setting, since purchasing decisions send a clear message to suppliers and share the values of the setting with the wider community.
  • Companies and their environmental/ CSER policies are researched before a new purchase is made. Look out for Environmental standards or ethical trading standards such as Corp B or Fairtrade or ISO14000 or Green Mark or Green Accord or E4 Environment, Carbon Smart, Planet Mark.

Staff are involved with and made aware of all changes in investment and purchasing. They are encouraged to make similar changes to purchasing at home.

Below is a description of a setting which qualifies for the stage: Improvements Making a Difference, in terms of selecting banks, suppliers and investments.

Money

  • Company and personal accounts are moved to banks with high environmental and ethical standards, and those that fund environmental and/or social improvements. Importantly, they must not invest in fossil fuels!

    3. Original banks are informed of the reasons for the switch, so that they are aware that their investment strategies do not align with our sustainable future.

    Staff are aware of banking switches and the reasons behind these. They share this knowledge with parents. Posters are displayed around the setting to inform others of unethical and environmentally damaging bank practices. They are encouraged to make similar changes.

    Doing well on your eco journey

    Below is a description of a setting which qualifies for the stage: Doing Well on Your Eco Journey, in terms of selecting banks, suppliers and investments.

    Money

    • Different pension options are researched and resultantly pensions are moved away from companies who invest in fossil fuels and other environmentally damaging activities.
    • Previous pension suppliers should be informed of the reason for changing, to send a strong of disapproval for support fossil fuel extraction.
    • It is a good idea to find out about the different investment funds available with your pension provider and see if they already have an ethical or fossil free pension fund.
    • Even the UK’s default workplace pension NEST has an ethical pension fund which by 2020 will be entirely Fossil Free.
    • The environment and ethics are considered with most new purchases.

    The personal purchases, banking and investments of staff reflect those of the setting. Staff share these changes with their families and friends to help spread the message. Staff are well informed about environmental issues surrounding money and are happy to help parents with their own changes.

    Below is a description of a setting which qualifies for the stage: Gone Fully Green, in terms of selecting banks, suppliers and investments.

    • No money is invested in fossil fuel or environmentally destructive companies.

    • The environment and ethics are considered with every new purchase.

    • Suppliers are informed of changes to purchasing and the reasoning behind this so that they understand the demand for eco-friendly products.

    • If the company chooses to invest beyond pensions and savings, ‘impact investments’ are available which have a positive effect on society and the environment.

    • These should be carefully researched and selected to ensure money is not supplied to fossil fuel or high carbon emission producing companies.

    Whilst pensions funds are an unusual topic to discuss at a nursery, parents should be informed about the setting’s changes via informative posters displayed around the setting. This will allow parents to rethink their own pensions and discuss this with staff if they wish.
